Rainy season in Cusco, the safety of every traveler is the heart of Life Expeditions

During the rainy season in Cusco, Life Expeditions comprehensively reinforces its commitment to the safety and well-being of every traveler. Heavy rainfall, constant humidity, and landslides typical of these months increase the risks on high mountain routes, especially on demanding circuits such as the Inca Trail and Choquekirao, which remain temporarily closed until March 15 each year. Out of responsibility and prevention, we suspend these routes while conditions are not optimal, always prioritizing the integrity of our passengers above any itinerary. We firmly believe that true adventure is enjoyed with planning, prudence, and professional guidance.

Unlike other operators who continue to market high-risk routes even during heavy rains or unstable weather conditions, our philosophy prioritizes prevention and responsibility over operating at any cost. We believe that no adventure justifies endangering the integrity of our passengers or our team. For this reason, we apply strict protocols, constant climate evaluations, and timely decisions to suspend or reschedule, ensuring that each trip takes place only when conditions are truly safe.

Inca Trail Closed

The Inca Trail remains closed due to heavy rains in the Cusco region. At Life Expeditions, the safety and integrity of our passengers is our absolute priority. Therefore, during this season we offer alternative, less risky tours designed so you can enjoy adventure with complete peace of mind.

Choquekirao Closed

Choquekirao, the architectural jewel of the Peruvian Andes, remains closed during the rainy season. For reasons of safety and conservation, access is suspended until mid-March, when rainfall usually decreases and reopening for visitors is prioritized. From March 15 onward, when weather conditions are more favorable, it is recommended to plan a visit to this impressive archaeological complex, considered the “sacred sister of Machu Picchu.”

Consequences of the Rainy Season in Cusco

Looking back to 2022, a tragic accident occurred in the Abra Málaga sector, on the Cusco (Quillabamba) Ollantaytambo route. A tourist minivan veered off and fell into a ravine, causing the loss of several passengers’ lives and leaving others with injuries of varying severity. This unfortunate event, linked to adverse weather conditions in the area, set a precedent for the importance of prioritizing safety on every trip.

It is worth mentioning that during the rainy season in Cusco, various incidents and accidents have been recorded due to heavy rainfall in the city and its surroundings. These weather conditions cause landslides, unstable trails, and difficult-to-access routes, considerably increasing risks in excursions and outdoor activities. Unfortunately, some tour operators do not prioritize passenger safety and continue offering tours without the necessary preventive measures, exposing travelers to avoidable dangers. Therefore, it is essential to choose responsible agencies that guarantee safety protocols, trained guides, and constant weather monitoring, thus ensuring a safe, reliable, and memorable experience in any adventure through the Andes.

Conclusion

The rains in Cusco are part of a unique landscape that enhances the beauty of the imperial city. However, during the rainy season, certain adventure tours such as the Inca Trail or the expedition to Choquequirao can be risky due to landslides and dangerous access conditions. For this reason, at Life Expeditions we always prioritize the safety of our passengers, adapting routes and travel dates to guarantee unforgettable experiences without compromising the well-being of those who accompany us.
