Highlight about Peru’s Origin Carnival
The Pukllay has its roots in ancient Andean celebrations that marked the end of the rainy season with rituals of gratitude to Pachamama. With Spanish colonization, these practices merged with Christian elements, shaping the festival as it is known today. Later, Andahuaylas native Isaac Vivanco Tarco promoted it under the name “National Encounter of Peru’s Origin Carnival”, enabling the event to gain prestige and international recognition.
