A Challenging Journey to Phinaya Pitumarca
We began our adventure at 2:00 a.m. from the imperial city of Cusco, setting out along the Cusco–Sicuani route. Along the way, we reached the town of Onoccora, where we took a detour that led us directly to our final destination.
Throughout the journey, the road gifted us with impressive Andean landscapes, vast plains, towering mountains, and natural views that changed with the sunrise. Visiting Puerto Kaliz was a unique experience that immersed me in an atmosphere of deep peace and serenity. Despite the intensity of the wind, which struck forcefully like icy blades, and the cold surrounding the glacier, the overall feeling was surprisingly calm. The vast white and blue landscape of the glacier stretched before my eyes like a separate, almost unreal world. The air was fresh and crunched beneath every step, while the nearby mountains rose majestically, creating an astonishing contrast with the gray, cloudy sky.
Despite the extreme conditions, there was something in the stillness of the place, in the immensity of nature, that generated an indescribable sense of calm. It was as if time stood still, allowing me to be fully present in such an impressive natural environment.
How to Get to Quelccaya?
Travel from Cusco to the community of Phinaya Pitumarca (a 4-hour drive on an unpaved road), and from there begin a demanding hike of 2 to 4 hours to reach the Quelccaya Glacier.
