Paddington in Peru: The Origin of the World’s Most Famous Bear

Paddington returns to the movies! The beloved bear returns to show us his incredible adventure in Peru. The new film, to be released in January 2025, explores Paddington’s origins. The character travels to his homeland to reunite with his family and learn more about his past. In this adventure, he will discover secrets of his ancestors and connect with his roots.

This is the third installment of the saga, released after six years. The film includes scenes in emblematic places in Lima and Cusco, showing the richness of Peru. Thanks to these scenes, people from all over the world will be able to see the landscapes and history that our country has to offer, as well as meet the spectacled bear, a unique species in the region.

Paddington’s Story: How did he get to England?

The story of Paddington originated in the short story A Bear Called Paddington (1958) by English author Michael Bond. Bond was inspired by a teddy bear he saw in a store at Paddington Station in London and bought it for his wife. Thus the famous character was born, as a symbol of solidarity with those who come from far away.

At the beginning, Bond had considered Africa as Paddington’s origin, but after researching, he discovered that there were no bears in that continent. Finally, he chose Peru, where the spectacled bear, a little-known species, lives. In the story, Paddington arrives in England from “dark Peru” after losing his parents in an earthquake. His aunt Lucy sends him to England, where he is taken in by the Brown family and begins his new life.

Paddington and His Great Leap to Fame

In time, A Bear Called Paddington became a classic of British children’s literature, and the films were a hit. The first two films grossed more than $500 million and earned BAFTA nominations. The story was also adapted for television and theater.

Paddington has captivated audiences with his charm and personality. He has become an icon of English popular culture and has gained popularity in Peru. This bond led to the unveiling in 2015 of a Paddington statue in Miraflores, Lima, in honor of the character and the connection to his native country.

The success of Paddington and his movies has put Peru on the international map, awakening the interest of more people to get to know our country and its incredible landscapes, history and culture.

The Spectacled Bear: The True Protagonist

Behind Paddington is the spectacled bear, or ukumari in Quechua, the only bear native to South America, which lives mainly in Peru. The spectacled bear is considered sacred in the Andean cosmovision, and special powers are attributed to it.

With its distinctive dark fur and white spots around the eyes, the spectacled bear lives in different Peruvian ecosystems, from humid forests to dry areas and high mountains. It is also essential to the ecological balance, as its varied diet makes it a pillar of the Peruvian ecosystem.

Unfortunately, this species is at risk due to hunting, deforestation and climate change. The visibility provided by the cinema is an opportunity to raise awareness about its protection.

Filming Locations in Peru

The film, directed by Dougal Wilson, was supported by Peruvian institutions for its production. Thanks to Film In Peru, a PROMPERU platform, representative locations in Lima and Cusco were chosen, such as the historic center of Lima, the Plaza Mayor, the Miraflores district, the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary and the Huayna Picchu mountain. During the filming, all safety regulations were complied with to preserve these valuable monuments and natural landscapes.

Soon we will be able to see these places on screen and enjoy a story of self-discovery and adventure.
