What is Inkilltambo?
Inkilltambo, whose name in Quechua means âflowery gardenâ or âflowery innâ, is an Inca archaeological site located in the district of San Sebastian, about 7 kilometers northeast of the historic center of Cusco, Peru. Located at an altitude of approximately 3,548 meters above sea level, it is part of the Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Park.
This archaeological complex functioned as a ceremonial and agricultural center during the Inca Empire. It is believed to have been built during the rule of the Inca Wiracocha (1420-1438 A.D.) and later embellished by his son, the Inca Pachacutec. Inkilltambo is noted for its agricultural terraces, irrigation canals, ceremonial enclosures and a huaca (sacred place) carved out of a large granite rock. The site reflects the importance of the cult of water and fertility in the Andean cosmovision.

How to get to Inkilltambo?

Option 1: Public transportation and walking
- Bus: You can take a bus from the Inka Express company from Tres Cruces de Oro (in front of the El ParaĂso shopping center) or Collasuyo (near the Rosaspata market). The fare is approximately 1 sol.
- Bus stop: Get off at the âTiendaâ bus stop in Alto los Inkas.
- Hike: From there, after registering at the entrance by presenting your ID or passport, you will begin a 45-minute hike along well-marked trails to the archaeological site.
Option 2: Alternative route from the Temple of the Moon
Another option is to take a bus to the Temple of the Moon and from there take a hike that will take you through various Andean landscapes. On the way you can visit the Temple of the Monkeys and a small waterfall before reaching Inkilltambo. This route, although longer (approximately 2 hours of walking), is ideal for nature and history lovers.
