What is the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a network of ancient paths built by the Incas, leading to the breathtaking citadel of Machu Picchu. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this trek is not just a physical challenge—it’s a cultural and spiritual journey through living history.
Today, there are three main ways to hike this mystical trail, adapted to different schedules, fitness levels, and availability.

Trek Options: Which Inca Trail is Right for You?
1. Classic Inca Trail (4 Days / 3 Nights)
This is the traditional and most complete version of the Inca Trail trek.
- Duration: 4 days and 3 nights.
- Total distance: Approximately 42 km (26 miles).
- Difficulty level: Moderate to challenging, with high-altitude passes like the famous Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman’s Pass) at 4,215 meters.
- Permit: Must be booked at least 6 months in advance. Only 500 permits are issued per day (including guides and porters).
- Highlights: Inca ruins such as Llactapata, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, and finally, arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku).
👉 Personal tip: Be prepared for 6–8 hours of hiking each day. Pack light, and don’t underestimate the importance of a good waterproof jacket. Sleeping under the stars amidst the Andes is truly magical.
2. Short Inca Trail (2 Days / 1 Night)
Don’t have four days? The Short Inca Trail offers a condensed but equally powerful experience.
- Duration: 2 days and 1 night.
- Total distance: About 12 km (7.5 miles).
- Difficulty level: Moderate; basic physical fitness is enough.
- Permit: Required but easier to obtain than the classic trail.
- Highlights: Start at Km 104, visit Wiñay Wayna, and enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.
👉 Important tip: Even though it’s shorter, it’s still a full day of hiking. Bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and comfortable shoes!
3. One-Day Inca Trail
Perfect for those short on time but eager to experience the essence of the Inca Trail.
- Duration: 1 full day.
- Total distance: Approximately 10–12 km.
- Difficulty level: Easy to moderate.
- Permit: Required but with greater flexibility.
- Highlights: Starting from Km 104, you’ll pass Wiñay Wayna and reach Machu Picchu the same day.
👉 My recommendation: It’s a packed day! Bring a small backpack, lots of water, and make sure your shoes are well broken-in.
Best Time to Hike the Inca Trail
According to Peru.travel and SERNANP.gob.pe, the best time to hike any Inca Trail tour is between May and September (the dry season).
During these months, you’ll enjoy clear skies, minimal rain, and spectacular mountain views.
However, nights can be quite cold at higher elevations, so pack accordingly.
👉 Important note: The Classic Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance.

Practical Tips for the Best Experience
Here are some lessons I learned (sometimes the hard way 😅):
- Pack light: Every extra kilo matters after hours of trekking.
- Train beforehand: Do some practice hikes with light backpacks and elevation if possible.
- Acclimatize: Spend a few days in Cusco before starting the hike to avoid altitude sickness.
- Respect the environment: Leave no trace and follow your guide’s instructions.
- Enjoy every moment: Despite the physical challenge, every ruin, every sunrise, and every starry night are memories you’ll cherish forever.
